CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Top-ranked Wake Forest beat No. 2 North Carolina 2-1 Sunday afternoon in field hockey action at Francis E. Henry Stadium. Wake Forest improved to 13-1 with the win while North Carolina fell to 13-3 with its second loss of the weekend. The game was played before 1,013 fans, UNC's largest crowd of the fall.
All three of the game's goals came in the first half on penalty corners. Wake Forest scored first, less than 10 minutes into the game. Junior Kelly Dostal's goal was assisted by junior Claire Laubach and sophomore Maeke Boreel. The Demon Deacons made the score 2-0 with a goal by Laubach, assisted by senior Kelly Doton, with 8:04 to play before halftime.
Carolina scored its only goal of the day with just under six minutes to play in the half when junior Kelsey Keeran tipped in a shot by junior Laura Douglas. Keeran, a forward from Columbus, Ohio, leads UNC in scoring with 37 points on 15 goals and seven assists.
Wake's 2-1 win was its second of the season against the Tar Heels. The Demon Deacons won by the same score in an overtime game in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Sept. 26.
"If we'd played poorly, I'd be more concerned, but we played the No. 1 team in the nation tooth-and-nail," UNC coach Karen Shelton. "We fought them hard."
Wake Forest led 14-9 in shots, but the Tar Heels had seven corners to six by Wake.
Neither Sunday's game against Wake Forest nor Saturday's 5-0 loss at Duke count toward the conference standings. In both cases, the Tar Heels had already played the season's designated ACC matchup. UNC remains 2-1 in league play with the only remaining game coming Saturday at home against Maryland, currently ranked No. 4. After that game, UNC hosts Radford on Sunday then plays a pair of road contests to finish out the regular season. The ACC Field Hockey Championship is scheduled for Nov. 6, 7 and 9 in Charlottesville, Va.
"It's all about what happens at the end of the season," Shelton said. "I think we're highly motivated to improve. We need our weaknesses exposed, and they were exposed this weekend."
