
Janda Advances To Main Draw Of Regional Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Jonathan Janda qualified for the Main Draw singles of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Region II Indoor Championships presented by Carolina Cafe and Bakery in action Thursday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Janda, from Shelby, N.C., won two singles matches Thursday to become one of only eight players to advance out of Qualifying Singlesand earn a spot in the main draw which begins Friday morning.
Janda started the day with a win over Gary Kilduff in the round of 32 by a comeback score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-2. Janda then upset R.J. Murray of NC State, the Wolfpack's No. 1 singles player last year, by a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 score in the Round of 16. Having reached the quarterfinals Janda was seeded into the Main Draw where eight of the 64 spaces were held for those advancing through Qualifying Singles.
Other Tar Heels in action Thursday included junior Geoff Boyd who beat Colin O'Brien of William & Mary 4-6, 6-6-2 in the round of 32 before falling to Todd Paul of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-0 in the round of 16. Sophomore Brad Pomeroy fell to Steven Ward of William & Mary 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 32 while senior Ben Aiken was defeated by Chris Westerhof of Florida State 6-4, 6-1 in the same round.
Carolina has four singles players competing in the Main Draw on Friday. Senior Andy Metzler will meet Danilo Mendes of UNC Wilmington at 9:30 a.m., Janda will face Peter Jakubek of Norfolk State at 11:30 a.m., third-seeded senior Nick Monroe will matchup against Marko Rajevac of Georgia Tech at 1 p.m. and sophomore Raian Luchici will battle Tito Balester of George Mason at 2:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Tar Heels were knocked out of all the doubles competition on Thursday. In the quarterfinals of Qualifying Doubles, the duo of Janda and Pomeroy were defeated by Mat Cloer and Jonathan Sucupira of Florida State 8-6. In the first round of the Main Draw Doubles, UNC's Monroe and Luchici were defeated by Peter Rodrigues and Jonathan Stokke of Duke 8-0.
