Nick Monroe Sweeps Singles And Doubles Titles At Top Of The Hill Carolina Classic

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina senior Nick Monroe led the way Sunday by winning at flight A singles and flight A doubles as the Tar Heel men's tennis team finished up action in the 2003 Top of the Hill Carolina Classic at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC sophomore Brad Pomeroy also got in the winner's circle as he took top honors at flight B singles.
Monroe, a senior from Olathe, Kan., was the top seed at the flight A singles spot and he came through with a championship performance, winning his final three matches of the tournament in three sets. Monroe finished off the tourney with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded Todd Paul of Wake Forest. Tar Heel sophomore Raian Luchici took third place with a win over Ryan Haywood of Davidson.
At flight B singles, Pomeroy defeated Tar Heel teammate Geoff Boyd in a three-set match to win the title. The score was 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Carolina junior Jonathan Janda fell to Andrew Simpson of Wake Forest 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 in the third place match.
At flight C singles consolation play, freshman Lenny Gullan beat Matt Stillwagon of Richmond 6-4, 6-4, sophomore P.J. Petrides beat Jean Michel Werk of Charlotte 6-4, 6-1 and senior Jeremy Ledford fell to Josh Vandergift of UNC Asheville 6-2, 2-6, 10-3.
Carolina won both doubles matches on Sunday. Monroe and Luchici combined to win the title at flight A doubles by beating Todd Paul and Andrew Simpson of Wake Forest 8-3. At flight B doubles, the Carolina duo of Pomeroy and Boyd defeated Jonathan Britt and Rob Gould of Davidson by an 8-4 score.
