CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina men's tennis coach Sam Paul has announced the signing of two of the state's top players, Will Plyler of Raleigh, N.C. and David Stone of Greensboro, N.C.
Plyler and Stone have had outstanding tennis careers at their respective high schools. Stone, a senior at Page High School, is currently ranked #1 in the state Boys' 18s and among the top 10 in the South. Stone has won the North Carolina State Qualifier three times. He is also a four-time member of the Junior Davis Cup which recognizes players for their outstanding character, sportsmanship and ability.
Plyler, the top-ranked player in North Carolina in 2002, attends Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C. Plyler has led the Caps to a 78-3 dual match record during his career including the last two NC state 4A championships. Individually, Plyler will try to become the first player ever to reach the state singles final in four consecutive years.
This past spring Plyler and Stone's high schools played in the 4A State Championship match, with Broughton claiming a 5-4 decision over Page.
"We have signed the top two players in North Carolina, but even more importantly, Will and David are both tremendous students and have been raised with the highest character. They both come to us from true Carolina families. They are going to be great contributers on and off the court to the University and represent a great future for Carolina tenns."
