CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina softball team swept Radford this afternoon, 7-0 and 2-0, in a twinbill at the UNC Softball Complex. Freshmen pitchers Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) and Alison Yin (Glendale, Calif.) shut the Highlanders out in both games. Cox fired her second no-hitter of the season for the Tar Heels, while Yin threw her first complete game shutout, allowing just two hits. UNC improves to 8-5, while Radford falls to 0-9.
The first game was highlighted by Cox's no-hitter. She struck out seven and walked three to advance to 5-2 on the season.
Carolina gave her plenty of help with the bats scoring four runs in the first, one in the third, fourth and sixth innings for the 7-0 final. The first inning was highlighted by a three-run shot over the right field fence by freshman first baseman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.).
Holden struck again in the third inning with a double and junior short stop Emily Price (Decatur, Ill.) followed her with a RBI double of her own as the Tar Heels led 5-0. Senior Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) tripled with two outs in the fourth inning and scored on a Highlander error to push the lead to six, 6-0.
The Tar Heels final run of game one came in the sixth inning as junior Jessica Robinson (Asheboro, N.C.) doubled with two outs and Tolleson drove her in as the Heels rolled 7-0.
Carolina had seven runs, on 10 hits and no errors, while Radford had no runs, no hits and two errors.
Tolleson, Holden and Price led the Tar Heel bats in the opener. Tolleson ended the game 3-for-4, with a triple, one RBI and two stolen bases. Holden finished 2-for-2, with a home run, double and three RBI, while Price went 2-for-3, with a double and one RBI.
The nightcap was another great pitching performance by Carolina's Yin. She threw all seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out five in the ballgame to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The game headed into the bottom of the fourth inning tied at zero. Price came up to bat with two outs and sent the first pitch over the center field fence to give Carolina a 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning as junior Dionne Streete (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) sent a ball down the left field line for a double and a RBI as the Heels defeated the Highlanders 2-0.
Carolina had two runs, on six hits and no errors, while Radford had no runs, two hits and no errors. Carolina was led by Robinson in game two. She ended the game 2-for-2. Price hit the game-winning home run for the second time in three games for her only hit of game two, while Streete had a double with a RBI.
North Carolina will travel to Austin, Texas for the Texas Invitational Friday, Feb. 28-March 2. UNC will face Florida and No. 5 Texas on Friday at 3 and 7 p.m., respectively. The Tar Heels and No. 15 Michigan will do battle on Saturday at noon CST.
