CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 21 University of North Carolina men's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season Friday night as the Tar Heels eased past the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 6-1 indoors at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC won all three doubles matches and swept five of the singles matches in straight sets in a swiftly played encounter that took only two hours and 35 minutes.
In winning their 14th straight home match, the Tar Heels got the clinching point for the second straight match by junior Nicholas Monroe, ranked 61st nationally, who downed John Hangstefer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Other singles wins were posted by 17th-ranked Trystan Meniane at No. 1 singles, Daniel Pinchbeck at No. 3 singles, Geoff Boyd at No. 5 singles and Derek Porter at No. 6 singles. Chattanooga lone point came at No. 4 singles when Thomas Knizat tallied from a set down to beat UNC's Andrew Metzler.
Carolina swept all three doubles matches, dropping no more than four games in any match.
The loss left the Moccasins at 0-5 for the season and was the fifth straight road match for UTC. The Mocs are coached by Carlos Garcia, an assistant coach for UNC's Sam Paul during the 1999-2000 school year. UNC will play at home again Sunday as it meets the No. 13 Washington Huskies beginning at 1 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
