RALEIGH, N.C.--In a competitive, record-breaking meet North Carolina defeated Towson, Maryland and host NC State at the eighth annual Governor's Cup Saturday. The Tar Heels set school records in vault, floor exercise and the team's total score. The combined score of the two North Carolina teams, 392.450, proved victorious over the Maryland duo's 388.875 and allowed them to keep the Governor's Cup.
Freshman Courtney Bumpers continued to show improvement, earning Carolina's second perfect 10 of the season on the floor exercise. The score, which matches Junior Anna Wilson's accomplishment from last week's meet, is only the third-ever 10.0 in school history.
umpers set personal bests and placed in the top five in every event for the second consecutive meet with scores of 9.900 on vault and balance beam and 9.800 on uneven bars. Her score of 39.600 in the all-around is not only a personal best but also a UNC all-time record.
North Carolina set a record as a team on vault with a total score of 49.175. This surpasses the previous record, 49.150, set last year at James Madison. The team's score on floor, a 49.650 destroyed the record of 49.550, which has been achieved three times over the past two seasons (at home vs. James Madison in 2002, at the 2002 EAGL Championship and at last week's home meet). The final record of the night to be broken was the team's total score. The 196.775 earned Saturday knocked out the previous record of 196.425 from last season's EAGL Championship.
Wilson, placing second in the all-around with a personal best of 39.400, showed strong performances on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise. Her personal best vault score of 9.900 tied her for third place with teammate Bumpers. On uneven bars she placed fourth with a 9.825 and earned a 9.950 in floor exercise to tie for second place with sophomore Olivia Trusty and two other gymnasts.
Trusty, last week's EAGL Specialist of the Week, led the Tar Heels on uneven bars to record a second place finish with a 9.875. Her 9.950 in floor exercise ties her personal best from last season. Another top vaulter for Carolina was freshman Mikel Hester who finished fifth with a personal best of 9.875.
Senior Natalie Halbach posted her highest finish of the season on the balance beam with a 9.850 in a three-way tie for second place.
Junior Maddy Curley ended in a tie for sixth place with four other gymnasts on the floor exercise with a score of 9.900. She was followed by sophomore teammate Elisabeth Alsop who earned a personal best 9.850 to tie for 11th place.
The Tar Heels remain undefeated with a record of 12-0 after four meets, the best start to a season any Carolina gymnastics team has ever had. The team will next compete at the Towson Invitational in Towson, Md. on Sun., Feb. 16.
