MONTGOMERY, ALA. - Getting a clinching win in three sets from Andrew Metzler at No. 5 singles, the 13th-ranked University of North Carolina men's tennis team defeated the University of Alabama at Birmingham 4-1 in the first round of the 2003 Blue-Gray Tennis Championship at the Lagoon Park Tennis Complex. Coach Sam Paul's team advances to the quarterfinals where it will play No. 57 Tulsa Friday afternoon at 5:30 p.m.
North Carolina improved to 7-2 on the season with the win while UAB fell to 8-8 on the campaign.
Carolina easily won the doubles point Thursday afternoon as Greg Archer and Trystan Meniane at No. 1 doubles and Geoff Boyd and Andrew Metzler at No. 3 doubles won in lopsided fashion.
Play was then interrupted by rain Thursday afternoon and the match resumed at 8:30 a.m. Friday morning. Carolina picked up a pair of straight set singles wins as Trystan Menaine, No. 27 nationally, defeated Bastian Gruendler of UAB at No. 1 singles by a 7-6, 6-4 score. Nicholas Monroe at No. 2 singles defeated Andrew Maier of the Blazers at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 margin. UAB took its only singles win at No. 3 when Kristjian Mitrovski upset UNC's No. 76 ranked Daniel Pinchbeck in 12 straight games.
Carolina then got the clinching win at No. 5 singles as junior Andrew Metzler whipped Ivan Andreev of UAB by a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 score. The other two matches were suspended when Carolina got the clinching point.
