Tar Heels Sweep Monmouth With 14-5 Victory

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -North Carolina (13-5) defeated Monmouth (1-9), 14-5 in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Boshamer Stadium. This marks the Tar Heels' second weekend series sweep of the season and their sixth consecutive win. Carolina trailed the Hawks 5-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the inning to put the game out of reach.
Monmouth struck early with two runs in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff single by Cipriano Apicelli and the first error of Greg Mangum's career, Evan Clancy doubled to right and gave the Hawks the lead.
With the score tied at two in the bottom of the third, Carolina scored a run to grab the lead. Walks to Webb and Ryan Blake and a double by Jeremy Cleveland loaded the bases with one out for Chris Iannetta. Iannetta hit a long sacrifice fly to center field which allowed Webb to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.
The Hawks tied the score in the top of the sixth inning. Michael Gross entered the game in relief of Adam Kalkhof to start the inning and retired the first two batters he faced. But with two outs, he allowed a double, two straight walks and then hit Fran Rotella with a pitch to force in a run and tie the game. Matt Danford then came into the game with the bases loaded, walked Marc Weres then hit Nick Massari with a pitch to give Monmouth a 5-3 lead.
Carolina came back with 11 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Mangum reached on an error, Webb and Cleveland walked to load the bases with no outs. A wild pitch made the score 5-4, then Blake ripped a single to center, scoring Webb and tying the score. Iannetta followed with a go-ahead single to left, giving him two RBIs on the day. The Tar Heels would tack on nine more runs in the inning to take a 14-5 advantage.
The Tar Heels return to action with two games at home against Princeton on Tuesday and Wednesday. The starting time for both games will be 3 p.m. Carolina will then host Wake Forest for a three game series next weekend at Boshamer Stadium to begin ACC conference play.
