CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- In a close match, Tar Heel women's tennis beat No. 26 Harvard 4-3 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Sunday at 1 p.m.
A heated contest at No. 1 singles between No. 14 senior Kate Pinchbeck and No. 36 Courtney Bergman decided the match with Pinchbeck pulling out a victory, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.
In singles competition, the seventh-ranked Carolina team swept the No.1, No. 2 and No.3 matches. Senior Marlene Mejia, ranked No. 64 in singles, turned the tide for the Tar Heels when she defeated No. 68 Susanna Lingman. No. 41 singles player, Aniela Mojzis, defeated No. 85 Alexis Martine 6-3, 6-7, 7-5.
Adding to the victory were wins by UNC's No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams. Pinchbeck and senior Kendrick Bunn, ranked 29th nationally dealt a blow to Harvard's Sanja Bajin and Martire with a score of 8-2. Sophomores Kendall Cline and Mojzis also clinched a win, 8-5, over No. 22 Bergman and Lingman.
"This was one of the toughest wins we've had, "said Coach Jen Callen. "Harvard is a very tough team right now. They're playing well, and they've had some good wins. I'm so proud of the girls for being gutsy today.
"It was one of the most exciting college tennis matches I have ever witnessed. The fans were extremely vocal and supportive throughout the match. The enthusiasm, intensity, and desire to win were apparent from both teams. To me, this is what college sports is all about." The Tar Heels improved their overall record to 8-3 and will face off next against Santa Clara on March 9.
