CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--The East Atlantic Gymnastics League named thirteen North Carolina gymnasts, the highest number the Carolina program has ever had, to its All-Academic team. Seniors Anne Chaffee and Natalie Halbach led the Tar Heels to tie NC State for the highest number of four-time selections to the team.
Every school in the EAGL had at least seven gymnasts make the team, which requires a student-athlete to have achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average over the past two semesters. A total of 77 gymnasts honored record the second-highest number since the beginning of the league eight years ago. 1999 and 2000 prove to have been the most successful academic years for the EAGL so far with 88 gymnasts named to the team.
Sophomore Amy Williams of North Carolina was one of four EAGL gymnasts who earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the past two semesters. This is the second straight year that Williams has achieved such a feat.
Three of the four Carolina juniors - Maddy Curley, Skylar Inman and Amanda Smith - made the team for the third year in a row. Sophomore Olivia Trusty joined classmate Williams and senior Chrissy Klonne in being selected twice.
The three Tar Heel freshman - Courtney Bumpers, Mikel Hester and Cecilia Liu - received the honor as well. In addition to the freshman class, the senior class was the only one completely represented on Carolina's list.
All 77 gymnasts will be honored at the annual EAGL Awards Banquet on Fri., March 28, in Durham, N.H. The eighth annual EAGL Championship Meet will take place at 6 p.m. the following day in the Whittemore Center at the University of New hampshire.
