Tar Heel Invitational Rained Out

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Day two of the Tar Heel Invitational has been cancelled today due to heavy rain last night and this morning. Virginia claims the crown after finishing day one with a 2-0 record with wins over Hawai'i, 8-7 (8), and East Carolina, 5-1. North Carolina finished 1-1 with a 7-0 win over ECU and dropped a 5-3 decision to Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine also finished 1-1 downing Carolina and falling to Virginia. The Pirates ended the tourney with a 0-2 mark.
UVA's Sara Larquier was named the tournament's most valuable player after hitting .600, with four runs scored, three hits, two RBIs, one double and one home run. Also earning all-tournament honors for the Cavaliers were Hannah Owings and Heather Field.
UNC seniors Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) and Anna Tharrington (Rocky Mount, N.C.) were named to the all-tournament team after leading the Tar Heels offensively. Tolleson had a .571 batting average, with four hits, one run scored, one stolen base and one RBI. Tharrington ended the tournament with a .500 average, with two RBIs and one walk.
UH's April Crowell led the tournament with a .800 batting average and was intentionally walked twice against the Cavaliers. Crowell finished 4-for-5, with three RBIs and home run to earn all-tournament honors. The Rainbow Wahine's Justina Kahaku was the other selection for Hawai'i ending the tourney 4-for-7 for a .571 batting average (4th best in the tournament).
The Pirates' Lacassa Hill and Krista Jessup earned all-tournament honors for East Carolina. Hill finished with a hit and one stolen base, while Jessup threw one runner out against the Tar Heels and had one single for the Pirates.
North Carolina will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for a doubleheader against UT Chattanooga on Wednesday, April 2. The games are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
