CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Four University of North Carolina student-athletes have been honored by the Atlantic Coast Conference as recipients of Weaver-James-Corrigan awards, as announced by ACC commissioner John Swofford. Volleyball player Laura Greene, gymnast Natalie Halbach and swimmer Stephen Mohr are among 19 selected to receive Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarships worth $5,000 each. Soccer player Matt Crawford is one of four chosen to receive Weaver-James-Corrigan Honorary Awards, given to student-athletes who intend to continue competing in their sports at the professional or Olympic levels.
The students selected for these honors have performed with distinction in the classroom and in their respective sports while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. The awards are named for three past ACC commissioners: Jim Weaver, Bob James and Gene Corrigan. Recipients will be honored at a luncheon on April 11.
With four students among the 23 honorees, UNC had more award recipients than any other school.
Crawford, a member of UNC's 2001 NCAA Champion men's soccer team, earned All-ACC honors in 2002 when he set a school record with 16 assists. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he carries a 3.7 grade point average and is majoring in biology with a minor in German.
Greene, the 2002 ACC Player of the Year, became the first player in UNC volleyball history to earn All-America honors when she was named to the third team following her senior season. As a co-captain last fall, she helped lead the Tar Heels to their first appearance in the NCAA Regionals. A psychology major who is also working on a minor in chemistry, Greene carries a 3.5 grade point average.
Halbach is a two-time All-EAGL selection in the balance beam. In 2001, she registered the second-best beam score in UNC gymnastics history with a 9.95. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she carries a 3.95 grade point average and is working toward a major in international studies with a minor in French.
Mohr holds the third-best time in UNC swimming history in the 1650-yard freestyle, the fourth-best time in the 400-yard individual medley and the eighth-best time in the 1,000-yard freestyle. A tri-captain as a senior, he is a two-time winner of the Bruce Webster Memorial Award as Carolina's most dedicated swimmer. Mohr carries a 3.96 grade point average and is working toward a double major in business administration and economics.
