ATLANTA - The 12th-ranked women's tennis team continued to ride its wave of success Saturday afternoon in Atlanta and defeated No. 23 Georgia Tech 5-2. The victory puts the Tar Heels' win streak at five with only one regular season match remaining.
Georgia Tech took an initial lead in the match when Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto defeated Carolina's tandem of Kate Pinchbeck and Tanja Markovic 8-5 at flight three doubles, but the Tar Heels came back with close victories at flights one and two to claim the point. At flight one, the #16 pair of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline defeated the #45 Georgia Tech team of Kelly Anderson and Jaime Wong 9-7. At flight two, Carolina's Marlene Mejia and Lee Bairos also held on to claim a tight 9-7 win against Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho.
In singles play, the Tar Heels took control of the match with early wins at flights one, three and five. Senior Pinchbeck rolled past Gunn 6-4, 6-0 at flight one, while Aniela Mojzis also earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Wong at flight three. Cline's 6-2, 6-2 win over Georgia Tech's Shosho at flight five gave Carolina the 4-0 score it needed to clailm the victory.
Mejia accounted for the Tar Heels fifth and final point of the match with a comeback win at flight two. The senior from Lansdale, Penn. defeated Georgia Tech's Anderson 4-6, 7-5, 10-1.
The Tar Heels are now 15-6 and 6-1 in the ACC. Carolina will travel to Clemson Sunday to take on the Tigers at noon in their final regular season match this year.
