COLLEGE PARK, MD.- North Carolina (25-11, 6-5 ACC) took both games of a doubleheader from Maryland (11-20, 0-10 ACC) on Saturday at Shipley Field. The Tar Heels used a couple of strong offensive performances to pull their record above .500 in the conference while the Terrapins remained winless in the ACC.
Daniel Moore improved his record to a perfect 5-0 by pitching a complete game in which he gave up just two runs on two solo homers. Moore took a shutout into the eighth inning but allowed home runs in consecutive innings.
Three home runs provided most of the scoring for Carolina in the game. Ryan Blake, Wes Moyer and Sammy Hewitt all homered for the Tar Heels. Hewitt led the way for UNC's offense, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Carolina's offense again proved too much for Maryland pitching to handle as the Tar Heels pounded out 15 runs on 19 hits. Freshman starter Adam Kalkhof picked up his team-leading sixth win by giving up just two runs in seven innings pitched while striking out eight Terrapin batters.
The Tar Heels again played long ball, getting four home runs from the heart of their lineup. Jeremy Cleveland went 4-for-4 with four runs and five RBIs and hit his team-leading tenth and eleventh home runs of the season. Senior Sean Farrell also drove in five runs in game two, four of which came on his grand slam in the top of the fourth inning. Hewitt's second home run of the day came in the top of the sixth inning and gives him eight on the year now.
Matt Danford and Bo Dickerson pitched a perfect eighth and ninth for the Tar Heels, striking out four of the six batters they faced. This marked the first time Dickerson pitched in a game since being injured in his first start of the season against Seton Hall on February 23.
The Tar Heels and Terrapins will conclude their series with game three on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. Carolina will be going for their first ACC sweep of the season before returning home to Chapel Hill for a game against Virginia Commonwealth on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
