Men's Tennis Squad Begins Defense Of ACC Championship Thursday

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis team will begins its defense of the Atlantic Coast Conference championship Thursday when it meets NC State in the opening round of the 2003 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship at Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. Match time Thursday is 10 a.m.
UNC is seeded No. 7 in an extremely balanced ACC. The Wolfpack is No. 8. UNC went 3-5 in the regular season and tied for sixth with Georgia Tech but the Yellow Jackets are the No. 6 seed because of its 4-3 regular season win over Carolina. The Wolfpack finished 1-7 in the league and lost to UNC this past Sunday 7-0 in Cary, N.C.
The winner of the Thursday match will move on to meet No. 2 seed Clemson (6-2 in the ACC) in Friday's quarterfinals at 12 p.m.
Duke earned the top seed at 8-0, Clemson is No. 2 at 6-2, Florida State No. 3 at 6-2, Wake Forest No. 4 at 5-3, Virginia No. 5 at 4-4, Georgia Tech No. 6 at 3-5, UNC No. 7 at 3-5, NC State No. 8 at 1-7 and Maryland No. 9 at 0-8.
Despite its 3-5 conference mark, the Tar Heels were in every ACC match this season. Carolina beat Virginia 4-3, NC State 7-0 and Maryland 6-0. The Tar Heels lost to Clemson 5-2, Wake Forest 4-2 and to Georgia Tech, Duke and Florida State all by 4-3 scores.
Semifinals are Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. (UNC bracket). The Championship is Sunday at 11 a.m.
UNC won last year's championship by beating Virginia 4-0 in the quarterfinals, Wake Forest 4-2 in the semifinals and Georgia Tech 4-3 in the championship match.
