CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 14 in this week's IWLCA national poll, withstood a second-half rally by the University of Massachusetts and held on for a 9-8 win on Thursday afternoon at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Allison Higgins, Brooke Dieringer and Beth Ames each scored two goals for the Tar Heels. Stephanie Scurachio added three assists. Lydia Robinson had four goals and an assist for the Minutewomen.
With the win, Carolina improves to 6-8 this season. Massachusetts falls to 9-6 with the loss.
Higgins and Dieringer each scored their two goals in the first half, while Scurachio had three assists prior to halftime. UNC led 3-0 before the Minutewomen scored their first goal, and the score was 6-2 at halftime.
The Tar Heels seemed to be in control early in the second half, as Ames scored to put UNC up 7-2 less than four minutes into the second stanza. Carolina led by as many five goals twice in the second half, but UMass controlled play for much of the latter stages of the game and almost tied it late in the contest.
After UNC led, 9-4 with under 15 minutes to go, UMass scored the game's final four goals, three by Robinson, to pull within 9-8 with just over five minutes left. The Minutewomen had several offensive chances to tie the game but could not connect. Katelyn Hoffman recorded 11 saves for the Tar Heels in goal.
Carolina will return to action on Sunday at noon at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Feb. 28 but was rescheduled due to wintry weather in Baltimore.
