CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (22-10, 4-4 ACC) defeated Georgia Tech (23-6, 4-1 ACC), 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. Carolina starter Adam Kalkhof did not allow a hit through the first 6.2 innings and collected his team-leading fifth win of the season. Kalkhof pitched 7.1 innings, gave up just three hits and tied his career-high with ten strikeouts.
The Tar Heels scored four times in the bottom of the second inning and chased Georgia Tech starter Aaron Walker from the game. Sammy Hewitt reached on a two-base error to lead off the inning and moved to third when Chris Iannetta followed with a single to right. Ryan Blake then doubled down the left field line, scoring Hewitt. A sacrifice fly by Mell Adams brought Iannetta home and gave Carolina a 2-0 lead. The Tar Heels would push two more runs across before the end of the inning, taking a four-run lead.
Carolina extended its lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Georgia Tech reliever Andrew Kown had retired all eight batters he faced since entering the game in the second inning, but with one out, Jeremy Cleveland singled then scored when Sean Farrell blasted his seventh home run of the season.
Georgia Tech finally collected their first hit and run thanks to Matt Murton's ninth home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning.
The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Two singles and an RBI groundout by Eric Patterson brought Georgia Tech within three runs.
The Tar Heels and Yellow Jackets will wrap up their series with the third and deciding game on Sunday at 1:30 pm.
