CHAPEL HILL - The 13th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team came from behind to roll past 32nd-ranked Virginia 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Cavaliers jumped to a 1-0 lead after claiming the doubles point with wins at flights two and three.
Carolina's only doubles win came at flight one, where Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline paired up to defeat Henriette Williams and Jen Tuchband 8-6. Virginia's Kristen James and Lori Stern defeated Marlene Mejia and Lee Bairos 8-5 at flight two, and Kyle Montgomery and Lauren Bruch defeated the Tar Heels' number three team of Kate Pinchbeck and Kendrick Bunn 8-2.
In singles competition however, the Tar Heels came out ready to take care of business, claiming five of six matches to secure the 5-2 victory.
"The difference today was that everyone of our singles players really came out to play. I thought Virginia came out playing extremely well in doubles, and I'm proud of the team for playing hard and keeping composure throughout the match," said Coach Jen Callen.
The first singles player to claim a point for Carolina was Mojzis, who exited the court area after a solid performance at flight three, where she defeated Kristen James 6-4, 6-2. Cline earned the Tar Heels' second point at flight five when she eased past Dora Bechliwanis 6-2, 6-1.
The Cavaliers would fight back and tie the match 2-2 with a victory at flight four, where Lori Stern defeated Bairos 7-5, 6-3. That proved to be Virginia's final point of the match, and their only singles victory. Next, at flight one, Pinchbeck defeated Williams 6-4, 6-2.
Shortly after, freshman Tanja Markovic clinched the match for the Tar Heels at flight six, where she defeated Marta Bachliwanis 7-6(3), 6-4. Mejia ended the match at flight two with a 7-6(5), 6-1 win over Tuchband.
With the win, the Tar Heels record improves to 12-6, and 3-1 in the ACC. Carolina will host Maryland Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in their final regular season home match of the year.
