CHAPEL HILL - The 13th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team defeated Maryland 6-1 Sunday afternoon in its final regular season match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels received default wins at flight three doubles and flight six singles prior to the match, because the Maryland team consisted of only five players.
Senior Marlene Mejia and junior Lee Bairos clinched the doubles point for Carolina when they defeated Emily Marker and Chloe Chavardes 8-4 at flight two doubles. The Terrapins pulled off a close win at flight one doubles, with Ramona But and Marta Jedrzejak edging past Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline 9-7.
The Tar Heels encountered minimal trouble in singles competition, beginning at flight three, where Mojzis rolled past Marta Jedrzejak 6-2, 6-2. The Terrapins fought back at flight onewith a Ramona But victory over Kate Pinchbeck, but from that point on it was all Carolina blue and white.
airos continued her recent strong play and clinched the match for the Tar Heels at flight four by defeating Jennifer Dent 7-5, 6-1. Kendall Cline followed Bairos with a come from behind victory over Maryland's Chavardes at flight five, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Mejia earned the Tar Heels final point of the match when she defeated Emily Marker 6-1, 6-7(6), (10-3).
Carolina is now 13-6 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. Coach Jen Callen said she is happy with her team's position at this point in the season and is confident in the way the Carolina players are performing. "We are actually in the same place as last year, and I am looking forward to our upcoming matches," she said.
The Tar Heels have three ACC matches remaining before they look to defend their ACC title from last season. They will travel to Raleigh Wednesday, April 9 to take on North Carolina State at 2:30 p.m.
