Chapel Hill - The 12th-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team shut out N.C. State Wednesday afternoon without dropping a single set. The Atlantic Coast Conference match was originally scheduled to be played at the Cary Tennis Center, but was moved to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center at Duke University due to rain.
The Tar Heels claimed an early 1-0 lead when they swept the doubles point, and never looked back. The sophomore pair of Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, ranked No. 16 in the nation by the ITA, rolled past N.C. State's Jennifer Jassawalla and Myrna Bawono 8-2 in the flight one competition.
Carolina's number three team of senior Kate Pinchbeck and freshman Tanja Markovic also dominated their match with an 8-2 score over Virginia Romero and Carmen Torres. Lee Bairos and Marlene Mejia encountered little trouble on the number two court as well, where they overpowered the Wolfpack pair of Loni Worsley and Danielle Stadelmann 8-4.
Carolina followed with a forceful performance in singles competition, where the Tar Heels did not drop a single set. At flight one, #13 Pinchbeck defeated Kristin Lam 6-2, 6-2. One court over at the number two spot, fellow senior #38 Mejia won 6-2, 6-0 against N.C. State's Romero.
At flight three singles, Carolina's #67 Mojzis overpowered Worsley 6-3, 6-5. Lee Bairos continued her recent strong play to ease by N.C.State's Bawono 6-1,6-0. Cline continued the Tar Heel train of wins at number five when she defeated Jassawalla 6-2, 6-2, and Markovic's match at number six was not different. The freshman from New Zealand encountered little trouble from the Wolfpack's Torres in her 6-1, 6-1 win.
The Tar Heels record is now 14-6 and 5-1 in the ACC. Carolina will travel to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m.
