Tar Heels Fall To #8 Georgia Tech, 12-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Georgia Tech (24-6, 5-1 ACC ) defeated North Carolina (22-11, 4-5 ACC), 12-5 on Sunday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. The Yellow Jackets never looked back after a five-run second inning and starting pitcher Kyle Bakker improved to 5-0 on the season. Carolina shortstop Chad Prosser extended his hitting streak to 17 games, but UNC fell to 4-5 in ACC play.
Georgia Tech got on the board with five runs in the top of the second inning. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with no outs and Micah Owings hit a sacrifice fly which scored Jeremy Slayden who led off the inning with a double. Carolina starter Jonathan Hovis was pulled from the game trailing 2-0. With two outs and the bases loaded again, Eric Patterson hit a three-run double into the left-center field gap.
Carolina's first run of the game came in the bottom of the fourth when Chris Iannetta hit his fifth home run of the season.
The Yellow Jackets added to their lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Slayden doubled leading off the inning and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Owings later hit his tenth home run of the season, a two-run shot over the 355 foot sign in right-center field.
The Tar Heels continued to chip away at Georgia Tech's lead and scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. Prosser led off the inning with a double, and after a single by Jeremy Cleveland, scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Sean Farrell, making the score 9-3.
The Tar Heels return to action with a game against High Point at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Carolina then travels to UNC-Wilmington for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday evening before heading to College Park next weekend for a three-game series at Maryland.
