Chapel Hill, N.C. ----- The University of North Carolina women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Tournament round of 16 with a 4-1 win over Clemson at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday.
"I'm so excited for our team," said second-year head coach Jen Callen. "They've worked so hard since I've been here and they deserve it. I'm especially happy for the seniors who have done so much for this team."
After winning the doubles points, Carolina scored victories at No. 2, 5 and 6 singles to win the match. Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, ranked seventh in the country in doubles, helped Carolina secure the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Julie Coin and Laurence Jayet.
Senior Marlene Mejia and junior Lee Bairos won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles and then carried the momentum of that win into singles action. Bairos defeated Jayet at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3, and Mejia clinched the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Alix Lacelarie at No. 2 singles.
"Marlene and Lee came out aggressive and made some great shots in doubles," said Callen. "Marlene played solid during the entire match. She served well, faught hard and played tough when she had too."
Clemson scored its lone point of the match at No. 4 singles when Ioanna Paun knocked off Carolina's Kendall Cline, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 6 singles, Carolina's Kendrick Bunn easily defeated Ania Dolinska, 6-1, 6-1 to earn the Tar Heels' first point during singles competition.
