Tar Heels Fall In Ten Innings To Virginia, 7-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia (28-23, 11-12 ACC) defeated North Carolina (37-19 13-11 ACC), 7-5 on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium. In the final regular season game of the year, the Tar Heels' bullpen continued to struggle and UNC suffered its sixth loss in its last nine ACC games. Matt Avery pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win for Virginia.
Carolina jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Greg Mangum drew a leadoff walk and Chad Prosser followed with a single through the right side. With two outs, Sammy Hewitt walked to load the bases and Ryan Blake singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Mangum and Prosser.
Virginia's Joe Koshansky cut UNC's lead in half with a tape-measure home run over the trees behind the right field wall in the top of the second inning.
The Cavaliers tied the score with a run in the top of the fourth inning. With Koshansky and Mark Reynolds on base and two outs, Chris Sweet lined a double down the left field line. Koshansky scored from second, but Reynolds was cut down at the plate as Prosser cut off Sean Farrell's throw from left field and fired a perfect relay home to retire Reynolds.
The Tar Heels grabbed the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Blair Waggett lined a two-out double off the left field wall and came around two batters later when Prosser lined an RBI single up the middle.
With the scored tied in the bottom of the fifth, Farrell's 11th home run of the season gave the Tar Heels a 4-3 lead.
Koshansky's second home run of the game in the top of the sixth tied the score at four.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Wes Moyer lined a single into left field which scored Blake who had reached earlier in the inning on a single. This gave the Tar Heels a 5-4 advantage.
Virginia tied the score with a run in the top of the ninth inning. Paul Gillispie singled to lead off the inning and Scott Headd reached on a fielder's choice. The next batter was Eric Christensen who singled into center field, scoring pinch runner Miguel Luina with the tying run.
The Cavaliers scored twice in the top of the tenth to grab a 7-5 lead. Koshansky singled and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Gillispie. The throw to the plate by Carolina rightfielder Jeremy Cleveland got away from catcher Chris Iannetta, which allowed Reynolds to score from second with an extra insurance run for Virginia.
The Tar Heels will travel to Salem, Virginia for the ACC Tournament beginning next week.
