Tar Heels Eliminated By Georgia Tech, 10-6

SALEM, VA. - No. 2 Georgia Tech (42-16) defeated fifth-seeded North Carolina (39-21), 10-6 on Sunday morning at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium to eliminate the Tar Heels from the ACC Tournament. UNC led 5-0 after the top of the third, but the Yellow Jackets scored ten unanswered runs and starting pitcher Chris Goodman went eight innings for Georgia Tech, and allowed just one hit after the third inning. Sean Farrell went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in a losing effort for Carolina and finished the tournament with a .556 batting average.
The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Greg Mangum led the game off with a sharp single into center field and moved to third when Chad Prosser grounded a single into right field. With one out, a groundout to shortstop by Farrell scored Mangum with Carolina's first run.
Carolina extended its lead with four runs in the top of the third. Wes Moyer and Mangum recorded consecutive singles to lead off the inning, and Prosser reached on an error by Georgia Tech third baseman Micah Owings to load the bases with no outs. Jeremy Cleveland then lined a doubled into the left-center field gap, scoring Moyer and Mangum. On the play, shortstop Tyler Greene was the cutoff man and made a throwing error, allowing Prosser to score and Cleveland to move over to third base. Farrell knocked in Cleveland, his second RBI of the game with a sharp single to right field.
Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Georgia Tech scored three times to pull within a run. Matt Murton started the inning off with a double into right-center field and Clifton Remole followed with a single. The next batter, Mike Nickeas lined a 3-2 pitch into left field, scoring Murton. Jeremy Slayden followed with a double off the left field wall which scored Remole and moved Nickeas to third. After a walk to Micah Owings loaded the bases with no outs, Carolina reliever Bo Dickerson got Greene to ground into a double play, but Nickeas scored on the play.
The Yellow Jackets took a 9-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Remole walked, Nickeas was hit by a pitch and Owings walked to load the bases. With one out, Greene lifted a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Remole with the tying run. With two outs, Brandon Boggs then lined a two-run triple down the right field line to give Georgia Tech its first lead. After a walk to Eric Patterson, Steven Blackwood knocked in Boggs and Patterson with a double to the left field wall. Murton ended the scoring with an infield single which scored Blackwood from second.
