CARY, N.C. - Freshman Wes Shull scored his second goal in as many exhibitions at the 69:35 mark to give the No. 19 North Carolina men's soccer team a 1-1 tie with Old Dominion Saturday at Cary's SAS Stadium.
Shull fired a shot off the crossbar on a free kick by junior Tim Merritt from near midfield to knot the score at one. The Shelby, N.C., native also netted Carolina's first goal in a 2-1 win over College of Charleston Aug. 17.
Old Dominion got on the board late in the first half at the 43:48 mark when the Monarchs' Attila Vendegh collected a loose ball at the top of the box and fired low at the far post past Carolina freshman goalkeeper Justin Hughes. Vendegh came off the bench for ODU at the 24:52 mark.
The Monarchs had several chances to regain the lead but Hughes kept ODU off the board with four second half stops. He made five saves in the game and allowed the one goal in 90 minutes of action.
ODU started with Samuel Cameron in goal, and he made one save and allowed no goals in the first half. John Connelly came on in the second half and made a pair stops but did allowed Shull's game-tying goal.
Old Dominion outshot the Tar Heels, 14-10, on the night.
Carolina opens the 2003 regular season at 5 p.m. Friday against No. 5 St. John's in Winston-Salem at the Wake Forest Nike Classic. The Tar Heels also face No. 10 Connecticut in the event Saturday.
