CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After scoring the game-winning goal in the Tar Heels' overtime win over Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 14, North Carolina junior midfielder Andrew Rhea was named to the Soccer America Team of Week announced Wednesday.
Rhea buried a free kick in the lower right corner of the net in the 96th minute of play to lift UNC (5-0-1) to a 2-1 victory over VCU in the final game of the 2003 Nike Carolina Classic. The Tar Heels are off to their best start since the 1987 season.
Rhea is the second Tar Heel to earn a spot on this weekly squad, as junior forward Marcus Storey was honored after scoring three goals at the Wake Forest adidas Classic in the opening weekend of the season.
Carolina opens Atlantic Coast Conference play this weekend at Virginia on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday but was moved because of inclement weather expected to occur in the Charlottesville area.
