CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman Wes Shull connected on a free kick in the 109th minute of play to give the No. 8 North Carolina men's soccer team a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Duke (2-5-1, 0-3-0 ACC) Wednesday at Fetzer Field. With the win, Carolina improves to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
With just 1:53 remaining in the second 10-minute overtime period, Shull, a Shelby, N.C., native, took the free kick from 28 yards out in front of the goal and deposited it past Duke goalkeeper Justin Trowbridge into the upper right corner for UNC's third overtime win of the season. With Shull's score, Carolina has had six different players score the game-winner in its six victories.
In a phyiscal game that featured seven yellow cards and 44 fouls, Carolina had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but was unable to hold off a Duke attack that scored two goals for the first time since Aug. 31. Junior defender Tim Merritt got the Tar Heels on the board with a goal at the 14:20 mark, his second score of the season. Senior co-captain Sean McGinty got the play started when he served a corner kick from the left side into the box to Shull, who guided the ball to Merritt, who in turn headed the ball into the upper right corner.
The 1-0 lead was short-lived as Chris Loftus scored the Blue Devil equalizer at the 21:37 mark off an assist Danny Kramer. Kramer dribbled through the UNC defense and fed Loftus on the left side of the net. He then pushed the ball past a sliding Merritt and Tar Heel keeper Ford Williams, who made three saves, for the 1-1 tie.
Junior midfielder Ray Fumo put the Tar Heels ahead 2-1 off a free kick in the 37th minute of play. Following a Blue Devil foul, Fumo guided the free kick from 32 yards out on the right flank at the far post and into the net for his first goal of the season. Freshman Jamie Watson was also an important part of the play, as he made a run at the far post and shielded Trowbridge from the play.
The Blue Devils knotted the score at two in the 63rd minute on a goal by Joe Kelly after a flurry of action in the Carolina box. He scored past Williams to the lower left off the rebound of a shot by Owoicho Adogwa. This score marked the first time this season that UNC has allowed two goals in a single game, as the Tar Heels had allowed just four goals in seven games entering Wednesday's action.
Carolina had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a header from Watson was deflected by a leaping Trowbridge in the 88th minute.
The crowd of 3,184 was the third-largest in North Carolina men's soccer history and witnessed the first overtime match between Duke and UNC since a 4-1 Tar Heel victory in 1993. With the victory, the Tar Heels receive one point in the Carlyle Cup standings, the fourth annual all-sport competition between Carolina and Duke.
The Tar Heels step out of Atlantic Coast Conference play Sunday for a 2 p.m. meeting with Harvard at Fetzer Field.
