CHAPEL HILL - Alivian Coates, an All-America on the lacrosse field and in the classroom while playing at James Madison University from 1997-2000, has been hired as assistant coach with the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse program, head coach Jenny Slingluff Levy announced on Thursday. Coates replaces Jen Larsen, who this summer left the Tar Heel program after three seasons to become the head coach at the University of Oregon.
Coates will assist Levy in every aspect of the Carolina program, including recruiting, practice and gameday management and administrative areas.
"Alivian is a great addition to our staff," Levy said. "She was a first-team All-America defender at James Madison and was an Academic All-America as well. She's already fit in well with our team this fall. She spent two years as the head assistant at Virginia Tech, and she'll bring a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge to our program. We're very excited about working with her."
Coates served as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Since August 2002, she has taught physical education for grades K through 12 at Greenhills School in Winston-Salem, N.C.
During her playing career at James Madison, Coates was a first-team All-America and an Academic All-America (IWLCA and GTE/CoSIDA) in 2000. She was a second-team All-America in 1999 as a junior. Coates also served as the Dukes' team captain and won first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors in 2000.
Coates earned a B.A. in pyschology with a minor in coaching from James Madison, graduating Cum Laude in May of 2000.
