Monroe, Metzler Excel For UNC At ACC Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - North Carolina's Nick Monroe reached the finals of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Coaches Indoor Championships at Wake Forest University's Leighton Indoor Tennis Complex but fell to second-seeded Doug Stewart of Virginia in a close match 7-5, 6-4 Sunday afternoon. Monroe, the tournament's top seed, had advanced to the final with a 6-2, 6-3 win over No. 4 seed Stephen Rozek of Virginia in the semifinals Sunday.
Meanwhile, UNC senior Andy Metzler finished the tournament as the consolation bracket co-champion with Georgia Tech's Scott Schnugg. Metzler, who went 1-1 in the main draw before losing to No. 3 seed Mat Cloer of Florida State, bounced back to win four macthes in the consolation bracket, including two on Sunday over opponents from Virginia.
Metzler and Monroe also teammed for the Tar Heels in doubles play but they lost a 9-7 heartbreaker to eventual tournament champions Peter Rodrigues and Jonathan Stokke in the semifinal round.
