CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Junior Olivia Trusty was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week for the week ending Jan. 25, the EAGL announced Tuesday.
Trusty, a 2003 Specialist of the Week, received the honor for the first time in her career as a result of her performances in a home victory against Maryland Sat., Jan. 24. The award marked the second consecutive week that a North Carolina gymnast was honored as Gymnast of the Week.
Competing as an all-arounder for just the second time in her career, Trusty earned a 39.50 all-around score, the second-highest in school history. In addition to winning the all-around competition, she finished first in vault with a 9.95 to tie the school's vault record. She won the floor exercise with a 9.925 score and tied for second place on bars (9.85). Her 9.775 beam score was a personal best.
Trusty is tied nationally for 17th place in all-around competition and leads the EAGL with an average of 39.30.
The undefeated Tar Heels (6-0) are currently ranked No. 21 in the nation and sit at the top of the EAGL, ahead of West Virginia's season average by less than a tenth of a point.
