CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by wins by senior Nick Monroe at No. 1 singles and doubles, the North Carolina men's tennis team opened its 94th season of competition Saturday with a 7-0 victory over in-state foe Davidson. Monroe, ranked 23rd nationally in singles, combined with Geoff Boyd for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and then downed Rob Haywood of Davidson in straight sets to power the Tar Heel victory.
Monroe's victory clinched the match for UNC which will play James Madison at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The win improved Monroe to 14-4 this season.
Sophomore Brad Pomeroy played at No. 5 singles and earned his first ever dual match win for the Tar Heels, who won five of the singles in straight sets. Boyd won at No. 6 in three sets. After splitting the first two sets with Porus Jetli, a tiebreaker was played for the third set with Boyd posting an exhausting 17-15 win.
Davidson played the match minus 32-year head coach Jeff Frank who is recovering from surgery. It is the first match in his coaching career that Frank has missed.
