ELON, N.C. - Senior forward Marcus Storey scored a pair of second half goals, and sophomore midfiedler Michael Harrington added a goal and an assist to lift the North Carolina men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Elon Wednesday at the Phoenix's Rhodes Stadium.
With the match tied at one since the 10th minute of play, Storey gave the Tar Heels (4-6-2, 1-2-0 ACC) a 2-1 advantage on a header off a Harrington assist at 72:38. Storey, a Missouri City, Texas, native, then netted a breakaway goal at 87:57 for the final 3-1 margin. With his first two-goal effort of the season, Storey now has a team-best five goals on the year and has 28 goals in his Carolina career, which is tied for ninth all-time. He also has 16 points (five goals, six assists) on the season, which already eclipses his point total of a year ago (15).
Before Storey's second half exploits, Harrington gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead with a rebound goal, his second of the season, at the 8:51 mark. Senior Andrew Rhea was credited with an assist on the play. Elon (4-6-3) quickly knotted the score at one just over a minute later on a Brett Paschall penalty kick, his fifth goal of the year.
Junior Ford Williams went all 90 minutes in goal for Carolina, posting four saves and allowing just the one goal. Taylor Saxe went the distance in goal for Elon, allowing three goals and making five stops.
The Tar Heels, who are now 8-0-0 all-time versus Elon, held a slight edge in shots, 12-10, and took nine corners compared to four for the Phoenix.
Carolina returns to action at home Saturday against seventh-ranked South Carolina at 7 p.m.
