Pomeroy & Boyd Win ITA Regional Championship In Doubles

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Geoff Boyd and Brad Pomeroy won the Wilson/ITA Mideast Region Doubles Championships by an 8-6 score over Duke's Jonathan Stokke and Peter Rodrigues. Carolina's team was seeded sixth in the tournament, while Duke's team was seeded fourth.
For the second consecutive day the Carolina duo rallied from an early 3-0 deficit. At 6-6, Geoff Boyd hit a screaming service return up the alley to break Rodrigues' serve and give the Tar Heels a 7-6 lead. Brad Pomeroy for the second day in a row served out the decisive game to clinch the Tar Heel victory.
Boyd and Pomeroy increased their record to 11-1 overall, winning their second tournament of the fall. The Tar Heel tandem also won the A Flight of the Groot Memorial Invitational and advanced to the semifinals of the USC Fall Invitational.
By virtue of winning the ITA Mideast Region Championships, Boyd and Pomeroy qualify for the ITA National Indoors to be held Nov. 4-7 at the University of Michigan. Boyd and Pomeroy will join seven other regional qualifiers and eight automatic selections to comprise the 16 team doubles draw.
