Women's Golf Team Continues To Improve, Finishes 16th At Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, TN.- Continuing their theme from Saturday, the Carolina Women's Golf Team again dropped strokes on the final day of the Mason Rudolph Championship. The Tar Heels posted a 299 on Sunday, their best round of the tournament. After being in last place by eight strokes on day one, Carolina finished with a combined total of 924 in a tie for 17th.
In a tight race for the tournament championship, Duke beat UCLA by eight strokes in the final round to win by one, with a nine-over 873 for the weekend. Georgia, Missouri and North Carolina State finished three, four and five, respectively, while tournament host, Vanderbilt, tied for tenth with Wake Forest at 897.
Jackie Beers of Georgia moved up from seventh place to take the individual title shooting a four-under 212 for the tournament. UCLA's Susie Matthews was the only other golfer under par for the championship at one-under 215. Second day leader Allison Walshe of Tulane led a group of five golfers at even par.
For the Tar Heels, freshman Ann Laney's two-over 73 helped her improve 21 spots to tie for 49th. Beth Marushak posted a 74 in Sunday's final round. Katie Miller and Laura Caniff both shot 76. It was the first day of the tournament when all four scoring golfers broke 80.
Head Coach Sally Austin's team will tee off again this coming Friday, October 8, in the Franklin Street Partner's Invitational which they will host at Finley Golf Course, recently ranked as the 11th best collegiate course in the nation by Golfweek.
