CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Highlighted by 30 games against teams that qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament and an expanded Atlantic Coast Conference slate, the University of North Carolina baseball team announced its 2005 schedule Monday. The Tar Heels will host 35 games at Boshamer Stadium, including the February 16 opener versus Appalachian State.
"Another very challenging schedule awaits us in 2005, possibly our most difficult schedule in my time here," said Carolina head coach Mike Fox. "We are playing some new opponents in Birmingham Southern, Ohio State, Michigan, Arizona State and College of Charleston this season. This will be exciting for our players and makes for an even more difficult non-conference schedule, which already included East Carolina, UNC Wilmington, Coastal Carolina, Virginia Commonwealth and Princeton - all NCAA teams in 2004."
In all, the Tar Heels are scheduled to play 30 of their 56 regular season games against 13 different teams that made the 2004 NCAA Tournament. These teams are: UNC Wilmington (Feb. 22, April 26), Birmingham Southern (Feb. 25-27), Arizona State (March 40, College of Charleston (March 9), Princeton (March 15-16), Clemson (March 18-20), Virginia (April 1-3), East Carolina (April 13, May 17), Miami (April 15-17), NC State (April 29-May 1), Coastal Carolina (May 11), Florida State (May 13-15) and Georgia Tech (May 19-21). The end of the season figures to be a particularly tough stretch for the Tar Heels, as their final 11 games are against NCAA teams from a year ago.
Following home weekends with Seton Hall (Feb. 18-20) and Birmingham Southern (Feb. 25-27) to open the season, the Tar Heels travel to Greenville for East Carolina's Keith LeClair Invitational. Carolina will face Arizona State, Ohio State and Michigan in the event.
Atlantic Coast Conference play opens the following weekend against one of the league's two new members, Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. (March 11-13). Carolina also travels to Clemson (March 18-20), Maryland (April 8-10), NC State (April 29-May 1) and Florida State (May 13-15) in league play. Each conference team will play a 30-game slate for the first time this season.
"The addition of Miami and Virginia Tech to the ACC now means 30 league games and 10 very emotional and competitive weekends," said Fox. "It should be a fun and exciting spring, and I know our players are looking forward to it."
The Tar Heels open their home conference slate against Wake Forest (March 25-27) and also host Virginia (April 1-3), Miami (April 15-17), Duke (April 22-24) and Georgia Tech (May 19-21).
The 2005 ACC Baseball Championship is scheduled for May 23-29 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Fla. NCAA Regionals are set for June 3-5, with the Super Regionals slated for June 10-12. The 2005 College World Series is June 17-27 in Omaha, Neb.
The Tar Heels, who were 43-21 a year ago, are in search of their fourth consecutive trip to the postseason. Carolina will play its annual five-game Fall World Series at Boshamer Stadium from October 11-21.
