CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore forward Heather O'Reilly scored a pair of goals and junior midfielder Kacey White had two assists to propel the second-ranked North Carolina women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Miami before 1,644 fans at Fetzer Field Thursday night. The win stretched North Carolina's unbeaten string to 39 matches over the past two seasons (38-0-1) as UNC improved to 11-0-1 on the campaign and 4-0-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
A pair of UNC freshmen also figured in the Tar Heel scoring attack in a big way as forward Jaime Gilbert had a goal and an assist and defender Robyn Gayle added a goal and an assist as well. Corinne Black scored the Tar Heels' fifth and final goal, the first tally of the season for the junior forward.
Miami's goal came off the foot of Britney Butcher, her second tally of the season, as she pounced on a loose ball in the box to score in the 84th minute of play. The Hurricanes fell to 2-7 overall with the loss and Miami is now 1-5 in the ACC.
Carolina outshot the Hurricanes 28-5 on the evening, including 12-0 in the first half as the Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead at intermission. O'Reilly scored the first Tar Heel goal, her seventh of the year, as she one-timed a pass from Kacey White past Miami goalkeeper Alex Alford at the 5:09 mark of the match from about six yards out. UNC increased the lead to 2-0 at the 19:50 mark of the match as Jaime Gilbert scored her seventh goal of the season, assisted by both Elizabeth Guess and Kacey White. Gilbert took a pass from Guess and beat the Miami keeper from 12 yards out in a one-on-one situation.
UNC broke the game open by scoring three goals in a span of 15 minutes in the second half. At the 62:06 mark, O'Reilly scored her second goal of the game and eighth of the season, finishing the scoring chance into an open net off passes from Jaime Gilbert and Robyn Gayle. At 72:13, Gayle notched her second goal of the season as she one-timed a ball from 45 yards away that was struck with velocity and went into the upper left corner past Alford to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Tar Heels. Corinne Black finished off the scoring for UNC at 76:30 of the game when she headed in a corner kick by Sara Randolph.
Carolina will travel to take on No. 23 Clemson Saturday at 7 p.m. at Riggs Stadium in Clemson, S.C. The Tigers are 8-4 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Miami will play at Wake Forest Sunday at 1 p.m. at Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
