CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of North Carolina volleyball dropped a four-game decision to visiting Florida State Saturday night, 30-27, 30-21, 28-30, 30-19, to spoil Senior Night for five Tar Heels playing in their last home match at Carolina. A pair of underclassmen led the way for UNC, as junior Dani Nyenhuis finished with 22 kills and 18 digs, while sophomore Amy Beaver had 12 kills on 23 swings for a career-high .478 hitting percentage. Kristen Rust notched a double-double with 17 kills and 20 digs to lead the Seminoles.
Florida State (18-10, 9-7 ACC) took the early advantage in game one, as a 6-1 run to open the match forced Carolina to use a timeout. The Tar Heels (16-14, 9-7) responded and won 10 of the next 15 points to tie the score at 11-all. Neither team would lead by more than three the rest of the way, but the consistent hitting of Florida State proved to be enough as the Noles outhit Carolina .333 to .250 and took the game, 30-27.
The Seminoles led early again in game two, only to see the Tar Heels tie the score at 14-all. But unlike in game one, Carolina was unable to keep it close, as FSU went on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 25-17 lead it would not relinquish. Amanda Santos was the driving force for Florida State, finishing the game with four kills and three blocks en route to a 30-21 win.
The Tar Heels were pushed to within three points of defeat before holding strong and extending the match with a 30-28 game three win. Carolina put together its best offensive effort of the night, and outhit FSU .365 to .275. UNC doubled its kill output from the previous game, with Nyenhuis and Beaver combining for 12 of the Tar Heels' 24 kills. With the score tied at 27-all, Carolina scored two straight to force a Florida State timeout. After a Seminole sideout, Katie Wright put down a kill to end the frame and force a fourth game.
FSU made certain that the Tar Heels would not be able to gather any momentum, as a dominating offensive performance put the game out of reach early, and the Noles took the fourth game going away, 30-19, to win the match, 3-1. Florida State hit a match-high .395 in the stanza to finish the match with a stellar .311 mark. After Carolina cut the lead to 10-7, FSU used a 12-3 run to effective put Carolina away.
Both teams will now prepare for the ACC Tournament, which begins Thursday in Charlottesville, Va.
