CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's tennis program, coming off a 23-5 record and a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship in 2004, will face an impressive 2005 schedule, including matches against 11 teams which played in last year's NCAA Championship. The schedule was announced Tuesday by UNC head coach Sam Paul, entering his 12th season as head mentor in Chapel Hill.
Carolina returns four singles and four doubles starters from last year and has added a large and talented recruiting class to a team which was 7-1 in the ACC last year and finished No. 17 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking of 2004. The Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in 11 years under the direction of Coach Paul and hosted a regional for the first time, losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to eventual NCAA quarterfinalist Ohio State.
UNC will play a total of 25 regular season matches in 2005 with 11 of them against teams which played in the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Those teams include Notre Dame, South Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, Auburn, Alabama, Virginia Commonwealth, Wake Forest, Virginia, Duke and Georgia Tech.
The 2005 ACC Tournament will be held in Cary, N.C., April 21-24.
