CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams both remained undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference as the Tar Heels swept dual meets against Duke at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heel men defeated the Blue Devils 213-84 while the Carolina women won 199-94. Aaron Burns and Jon Albrecht led the UNC men with three event wins each with both swimming on the Carolina's 200-yard medley and freestyle relay teams. Senior tri-captain Virginia Hanson was part of three event wins for the Tar Heel women's team.
Both UNC teams improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC with the wins. The Blue Devil men are now 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the ACC and the women are 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the league. Each win was worth one point to Carolina in the 2004-05 Carlyle Cup standings, the all-sports trophy between the two teams sponsored by Carlyle and Company Jewelers. UNC now leads the current Carlyle Cup standings, 5-3, heading into the Duke-Carolina football game in Durham, N.C. on November 20. That game will be worth two points in the standings.
On the men's side Tuesday, senior co-captain Eric Mohr, junior Chad Ames and freshman Ben Herboth each won two individual events for the Tar Heels. Mohr captured the 1000 free and 400 IM, Ames took the 100 and 200 flys and Herboth swept both diving events. Besides swimming on both winning relays, Burns had a win in the 200-yard breaststroke and Albrecht in the 100-yard backstroke.
On the women's side, Hanson captured both the 50- and 500-yard freestyle events while anchoring the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. Freshman Lindsey Marck won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle and sophomore Lauren Karatanevski captured top honors on both diving boards for UNC.
Freshman Kelly Woodruff won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:20.85, her career best time that was just short of reaching the all-time Tar Heel Top 10 in the event.
