CHAPEL HILL -- The University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team will head north this weekend for a pair of road games to begin its 2004 season. The Tar Heels, ranked No. 11 in the '04 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) preseason poll, will play at UMBC on Friday afternoon and at George Mason on Sunday afternoon.
The Tar Heels, who went 7-9 last year, missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996. Carolina returns nine starters and 16 letterwinners from its young 2003 squad.
Following this weekend's action, Carolina will play four consecutive home games in the first two weeks of March, including games against top-five ranked Loyola and Duke. All four of those contests will be played on home turf at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill.
