Chapel Hill, N.C. - Senior Dionne Streete hit the game-winning home run in game one and went two for three with an RBI and a run in game two as the Tar Heels swept a doubleheader with Mississippi at the UNC Softball Complex. The Tar Heels won game two 3-0 and in the first game won 2-1 after Streete hit a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"The one thing we talked about in practice this week was that we made sure we battled every at bat," said UNC head coach Donna J. Papa. "It is going to come down sometimes to a mis-pitch or something like that and you have to believe that we can still get it done and they did. Dionne has really been doing it for us. Natashalyn started it by getting on, but Dionne has been doing it for us all year."
Sophomore pitcher Crystal Cox won game one for UNC with a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out a season-high 11 batters. Cox came in game two in relief and pitched 3 1/3 innings without allowing a run or hit. Sophomore pitcher Alison Yin got the win in game two for the Tar Heels as she pitched 3 2/3 innings without allowing a run.
"I thought Crystal pitched one of her better games today, she had really good command of her pitches," said Papa. "She has a lot of confidence and winning that first game I think really boosted it. She came in really strong in that second game in relief."
Streete led the UNC offense in both games as she went two for four with a run and two RBI's in game one and two for three with an RBI and run in game two.
In game one, The Tar Heels fell behind 1-0 in the first inning after a leadoff triple by Ole Miss' Britte Hardy. Hardy scored after a single by Mandy Ott. The Rebels held a 1-0 lead for the rest of the game until the bottom of the seventh. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, senior outfielder Natashalyn Snipes singled. Streete followed with her clutch two-run home run to win the game for Carolina.
"I wasn't nervous," said Papa. "I felt like we could do it, I mean one run, you don't like being shutout by one run on your home field. We had hit the ball but we hadn't put our hits together. It just happened to be in the seventh, it shouldn't matter when it happens but it happened in our favor. It was a great time for it."
In game two, Streete kept her offensive spark for the team as she led off the bottom of the first with a single. Freshman outfielder Anna Evans and junior outfielder Jessica Young both followed with singles to load the bases. Streete scored when senior shortstop Emily Price hit a single to left centerfield to make the game 1-0.
The Tar Heels scored again in the second inning when Streete doubled in freshman outfielder Erin Dudley. UNC's final run of the game came in the sixth when freshman third baseman Joslin Higgins scored off a Anna Evans walk with the bases loaded. Yin and Cox combined for the shutout as North Carolina improved their record to 9-7 on the season.
The team will next head to Wilmington, N.C. to play in a doubleheader with UNC-Wilmington on March 2.
