Wilmington, N.C. - The North Carolina softball team improved to 11-7 on the season after sweeping a doubleheader at UNC-Wilmington. The Tar Heels won game one 9-0 in five innings and game two 8-0 in five innings. Freshman Anna Evans went four for seven with four runs scored, three runs batted in and a home run in the two games to lead the Tar Heels.
In game one, Evans hit a single with one out and junior Jessica Young followed with a two-run home run to make the score 2-0.
The Tar Heels scored two more in the second inning to make it 4-0. Senior Natashalyn Snipes led off the inning with a bunt single and then scored after a throwing error. Evans continued her offensive prowess as she doubled with one out and then stole third base. She scored after a RBI groundout by Young.
The Tar Heels added to their lead in the fourth inning when senior Emily Price hit a two-run home run scoring Young. Carolina finished off the game scoring in the fifth. Sophomore Michelle Hoffmann led off the inning with a single and pinch runner Theresa Nicholas scored off a RBI single by Snipes. Senior Dionne Streete followed with a run-scoring single and then Evans hit a run-scoring double to make it 9-0.
Sophomore Crystal Cox pitched five innings of shutout work, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
In game two the Tar Heels got off to another fast start as they scored six runs in the first inning. Price and Snipes had RBI hits, senior Jessica Robinson had a two-run single, and junior Brandi Griffin knocked in a run as she reached on an error by the shortstop.
In the second inning, Streete led off with a double and was followed by a two-run home run by Evans. The Tar Heels kept the lead at 8-0 through five innings as the game ended due to the mercy rule.
Sophomore Alison Yin pitched five innings without allowing a run and let off just two hits to improve to 4-4 on the year.
The Tar Heels will next travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the Florida Atlantic Tournament March 6-8.
