Carolina Blanks American, Falls to Navy and Eastern Michigan

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by a 3-0 record from heavyweight Ryan Adams, the North Carolina wrestling team shutout American, 40-0, but lost to Navy (24-11) and Eastern Michigan (18-13) Saturday in a quad meet at the Eagles' Bender Arena. The Tar Heels are now 4-9 this season.
Against the host Eagles, Carolina won all 10 matches, including pins by redshirt freshman Bobby Shaw (125 pounds) and junior Venroy July (197 pounds). Junior Mike Booth picked a major decision win at 141 pounds, while Andrew Slack (149) and Joshua Lee (174) both won via forfeit. Adams downed American's Jared Hymen, 10-7, for one of his three wins on the day. Carolina's blanking of the Eagles was the Tar Heels' first since a 35-0 win over UNC Greensboro during the 2001-02 season.
Adams, who improved his record this season to 26-9 and 11-2 in dual matches Saturday, also scored a 4-3 win over Eastern Michigan's Timmy Bryer, and against Navy, his pin of Andrew Adams marked the Tar Heels' lone victory over the Midshipmen.
Versus Eastern Michigan, July, who was 2-1 on the day, topped Tony Lyssiotis, 3-0 at 197 pounds, and Drew Forshey picked up a forfeit win at 125 pounds to close out the Carolina scoring. July is now 19-15 this season.
The Tar Heels return to action against at NC State Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack topped the Tar Heels, 26-12, Jan. 14.
