Carolina Men's Tennis Team Advances To Semifinals Of Blue/Gray Invitational

MONTGOMERY, ALA. - The No. 21 North Carolina men's tennis team defeated No. 34 Alabama 4-0 Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2004 Blue/Gray Invitational at the Lagoon Park Tennis Club. With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 13-1 overall on the campaign with their sixth straight win. The Crimson Tide fell to 5-5 with the loss.
Carolina will play No. 14 Harvard Saturday in the semifinals of the tournament. The Harvard Crimson is 11-1 overall after a 4-2 quarterfinal win over No. 35 Boise State Friday. Harvard is the No. 2 seed in the tournament and Carolina is the No. 3 seed.
The Tar Heels got off on the right foot with a win in the doubles point as Andy Metzler and Brad Pomeroy scored a decisive 8-4 win at No. 2 and Jonathan Janda and Raian Luchici winning at No. 3 by an 8-2 margin.
Carolina then won three singles matches in summary fashion to claim the team triumph. Andy Metzler whipped Joseph Jung 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3, Luchici won over Eric Molnar 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 and Brad Pomeroy downed Christian Brodersen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5.
