Tar Heels Split Two Games on Day One of FAU/Worth Invitational

Boca Raton, Fla. - The North Carolina softball team defeated Florida International 2-1, but then dropped their second game of the day, falling 1-0 in eight innings to Florida Atlantic. Sophomore pitchers Alison Yin and Crystal Cox led Carolina as they each pitched strongly in their respective games. Yin pitched seven innings against Florida International, allowing just one run on eight hits. Yin improved to 5-4 on the season as the Tar Heels won 2-1. Cox pitched seven innings of shutout ball before allowing a run in extra innings as UNC fell 1-0 to Florida Atlantic.
In game one North Carolina fell behind against Florida International in the second inning after the Golden Panthers Brittany Witherow hit an RBI single scoring Cynthia Turek. Alison Yin kept the Tar Heels within a run as she held FIU scoreless the rest of the game. UNC took the lead in the sixth inning. Jessica Young started the rally with a one-out single and Price followed with a double to center field to score pinch-runner Erin Dudley. With two outs in the inning Hoffmann got the game-winning hit, scoring Price.
In game two, against Florida Atlantic, both teams struggled to score during regulation play, as UNC's Crystal Cox and Florida Atlantic's Candice Freel pitched scoreless ball through seven innings. FAU finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth with a bunt that scored Jessica Sachs from third base.
The Tar Heels fall to 12-8 on the season and will return to action on Sunday with games versus Massachusetts and Notre Dame. UNC faces UMass at 10 a.m. and follow with Notre Dame at 2 p.m.
