Novice Rowers Fare Well At Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In a novice scrimmage Saturday afternoon on the Rivanna Reservoir, North Carolina's four beat host Virginia and the Tar Heel eight tied for second over the 2,000-meter course.
"It was a great experience for us and gives us something to work toward for our race next week," UNC novice coach Laura Fogt said. "We showed a lot of speed today against Virginia's depth."
Competing in choppy conditions with strong headwinds, Virginia's A boat led the eights race in a time of 7:51.89. After battling down the course and rowing stroke-for-stroke over the final 600 meters, the Carolina boat and the Virginia B boat both crossed the finish line in 8:12.54.
"It was an awesome race," Fogt said. "Virginia is always fast and it was great to be able to match the speed of one of their boats."
In the fours, UNC won in a time of 9:35.31 to the Cavaliers' 10:10.45.
The lineup for the four was Keegan Drenosky, Laura Rock, Alexis Ziavras, Katie Steele and coxswain Regina Elwell. Racing in the eight were Anna Fabiszewski, Mary Casale, Ashley Williamson, Cleo Washington, Christin Cotten, Sara Bentley, Catherine Nitz, Mallory Williams and coxswain Lauren Withycombe.
The Tar Heels return to action on Saturday when they host Georgetown at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. Both the varsity and novice squads will compete.
