CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In an emotional match that wasn't decided until a final third set, No. 33 Wake Forest defeated the ninth-ranked University of North Carolina women's tennis team 4-3 on Wednesday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the loss, the Tar Heels move to 13-5 on the season and 0-2 in ACC play. The Demon Deacons are now 8-7 overall and 1-3 in ACC action.
Carolina came out strong in doubles and took the first point of the day after winning at the No. 1 and 3 seeds. At the No. 3 seed, the Carolina freshmen pair of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long dominated Danielle Schwartz and Liz Proctor 8-3. After UNC's Kendrick Bunn and Caitlin Collins fell 3-8 to Ashlee Davis and Katie Martzolf, the doubles point was decided at the No. 1 seed.
The 23rd-ranked tandem of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline took an 8-6 win over 40th-ranked Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith, thereby giving Carolina the 1-0 edge heading into singles.
Wake Forest took the top three matches in singles while North Carolina grabbed victories at the No. 5 and 6 seeds. At the No. 5 spot, Anundsen cruised past Wake Forest's Sandie Knight in a 6-0, 6-0 win. At the No. 6 spot, Long came back after losing the first set to beat Schwartz, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
With each team having three points, the match came down to the No. 4 spot. Freshman Caitlin Collins lost the first set to Proctor, 3-6, and was down in the second set, but came back to take the second set after winning the tie-break. Collins fought hard in the third set, but fell, 3-6, 7-6, 4-6.
The last time the Demon Deacons beat North Carolina was in 2001, when Wake Forest took a 4-3 victory in Winston-Salem, N.C., on April 4. Carolina now leads the all-time series 23-16.
The Tar Heels continue conference play when they travel to face Florida State on Friday at 2 p.m. Carolina's next home match is Sunday, March 28, at 1 p.m. The Tar Heels host Notre Dame at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center for their last non-conference match of the season.
