TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - In its third match within the last six days, the University of North Carolina women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss at the hands of Florida State Friday afternoon at Scott Speicher Tennis Center. With the loss, Carolina moves to 13-6 on the season. The Tar Heels are still winless in Atlantic Coast Conference play after having played three conference opponents. The Seminoles are riding a six-match winning streak and are 5-0 in ACC play.
In doubles, Carolina and Florida State split the first two matches at the No. 2 and 3 seeds. After FSU took the No. 2 doubles, Carolina's freshmen tandem of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long defeated the Seminoles' Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny 8-5 for a victory at the No. 3 seed.
Florida State came away with the doubles point after winning a strongly contested match at the No. 1 position. The 23rd-ranked doubles pair of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline fell to FSU's Roxanne Clarke and Mihaela Moldovan, 9-8 (2).
In singles action, Mojzis, ranked 29th nationally, defeated Anca Dumitrescu at the No. 1 spot, in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Cline and Long also won their matches at the No. 4 and 6 seeds, respectively. At the No. 4 seed, Cline fought hard not to take her match to three sets. She defeated the Seminoles' Lindsay Deason in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6(8). With the win, Cline moves to 12-5 in dual match play.
In a battle between two freshmen, Florida State's Roxanne Clarke clinched the match after defeating Anundsen at the No. 5 position. Clarke came back to the win the third-set tie-break and the match.
The Tar Heels return home to host No. 23 Notre Dame on Sunday, March 28, at 1 p.m. The match will be played at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center and marks the season's last non-conference meeting for the Tar Heels.
