Marshall Hubbard hit .538 to lead the Tar Heel baseball team to a series win over 12th-ranked Florida State and is the Carolina Waterscapes Student-Athlete of the Week for March 22-28, 2004.

Hubbard, a junior from Ashland, Va., led the Tar Heels to a 4-1 week, including two wins over the Seminoles and two over Towson. Overall he batted .500 (9-for-18) with two homers, three doubles, nine RBI and seven runs scored. Against the Seminoles, he went 7-for-13 (.538) with a homer, three doubles and six RBI. He drove in three runs in UNC's Sunday victory. On the year, Hubbard is batting .347 and ranks near the top of the conference with nine home runs and 36 RBI. He also leads the team with 28 runs scored.

The UNC second varsity eight
Carolina's second varsity eight defeated Indiana Saturday with a time of
6:59.46 to the Hoosiers' 7:09.82 in racing at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C.
Competing in the UNC second varsity eight were Lauren Portnow (coxswain),
Miranda Harple, Mary Miller, Emily Dondero, Christina Payne, Michelle Hall,
Adriann Spinks, Becci Foster and Emily Glunz.
MEN'S SWIMMING
Yuri Suguiyama
Sr., Ijamsville, Md.
Suguiyama capped his Tar Heel career as he earned All-America honors in two events to lead UNC to a 23rd place finish at the NCAA Championships, Carolina's best finish since 1997. Suguiyama placed eighth in the 400-meter freestyle with a best time of 3:44.89 and 10th in the 1500-meter freestyle in 15:09.19.

Luchici went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles during the week as he led the No. 19 Tar Heels to a trio of wins over ACC opponents as Carolina beat Maryland 7-0, NC State 5-2 and Georgia Tech 4-3. Luchici defeated Scott Fink of Maryland 6-1, 6-2, downed Andre Iriarte 6-2, 6-1 of the Wolfpack and then whipped Georgia Tech's West Nott 7-6, 6-3 to provide the clinching fourth team point in UNC's victory over Tech. Luchici has won seven successive singles matches, all in straight sets, to improve to 22-7 on the season in singles play.

Last week, UNC's Jena Long won three singles and three doubles matches in five days.
On March 24, in singles play, No. 6 seed Long defeated Danielle Schwartz (Wake Forest) 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles, No. 3 seed Long and Sara Anundsen beat Schwartz/Liz Proctor (WFU) 8-3. WFU won the match 4-3. On March 26th, at the No. 6 seed against Florida State, Long beat Amberly Tantee, 6-1, 7-5. In doubles with Anundsen, the No. 3-seeded pair beat FSU's Brooke Cordell/ Christina Denny 8-5. FSU won the match 4-3. Then on March 28, No. 6 Long defeated Sarah Jane Connelly of Notre Dame, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Again paired with Anundsen in doubles play, the No. 3 seeded duo beat the Fighting Irish's Emily Neighbours/Kristina Stastny, 8-3. UNC won the match 5-0.
